A person’s life is one of constant transitions – from childhood to puberty to parenthood to empty nest, from having a career to retirement, from newly wed to newly divorced or widowed. We manage these transitions while struggling with the rise and fall of hormones, juggling careers and family life, or caring for elderly parents or ailing spouses. More often than in the past, however, people are dealing with these life transitions in quasi-isolation. Where once we lived in proximity to extended family and could count on the support and advice from other family members, today’s families are often scattered over long distances. Managing life’s transitions on ones’ own with few people to confide in is difficult and stressful and leaves many people feeling overwhelmed and confused about where their lives are heading. Also, a person’s life vision can change over time and many people have difficulty articulating what they want or knowing how to make it happen.
